If you love polka dots and have 10 grand to spend, then—well—you just might like one of these new Japanese cell phones. Japan is a country consumed by mobile phones, so standing out from the crowd is all-important. But amid slowing demand, one provider has gone radical. This, believe it or not, is a mobile phone, camouflaged by coolness. It’s part of a series released by KDDI, Japan’s second largest mobile provider. This hound is actually a handset, part of a drive by KDDI to place a greater emphasis on form rather than function. The company says the deluge of complicated options on regular mobile phones has left customers cold. KDDI spokesman Satoru Itou: [Satoru Itou, KDDI Spokesperson]: “Some of our users have complained that there are too many functions in their mobile phone to fully use. Thus, we developed a new line-up of mobile phone that have less function but distinctive design.” Some of the new models are the work of famed Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. But at nearly 000 dollars, customers like Mikiko Fujii like to look, but won’t be buying. [Mikiko Fujii, Customer]: “One million yen… for me, it’s not affordable. But for someone who loves fancy designs or consider cell phone as an accessory, one million yen is not nonsense.” There’s a thriving mobile phone culture in Japan – nearly 80 percent of the population own one.
