iPhone 3GS Released in Japan
Hundreds of customers lined up in Tokyo to get their hands on Apple’s new iPhone 3GS model. Wireless carrier Softbank has pushed its ties to Apple to dial up more business. More than 200 iPhone fans lined up outside Softbank Global Services’ Tokyo outlet for the new smart phone. 22-year-old college student Taisuke Fujimoto waited almost 24 hours outside the shop, but that’s all part of being the first in line. [Taisuke Fujimoto, iPhone Customer]: “It’s been a year since the first iPhone was released. There are a lot of new features but being able to take video is the most appealing for me.” The improved speed of the new phone models appealed to many customers. [Hiroshi Migimachi, iPhone Customer]: “It’s definitely fast. I tend to be a heavy user and with these improvements, I’m expecting quite a bit.” Softbank is Japan’s No. 3 wireless carrier and has enjoyed a boost from its Apple ties. But sales volume for the new iPhone was way below the US where over 1 million 3GS phones flew off the shelves in the first three days and there were over 6 million phone software downloads. Softbank CEO Masayoshi Son, often called a maverick like Apple’s Steve Jobs, has driven aggressive marketing for better returns. He is forecasting a 17 percent profit rise to over 4.2 billion US dollars. Son chatted with customers in the queue before the seven am countdown event.
